I know, I know, not a photo post, but I just had to chime in about the 3 Hollywood icons that passed away in the past week. I have to say it strikes a chord with me, because my family lost an important personal icon around the same time 2 years ago – my mother-in-law.
Ed McMahon had his time in the spotlight and many forget, he was “Star Search” long before American Idol. People can thank him for bringing many of todays big superstars into the light. I remember him on the Johnny Carson – Tonight Show (yeah, I remember that), now belonging to Conan O’Brian – and as the guy who was always trying to get me to buy into Publisher’s Clearinghouse and win my $10 Million dollars. A home visit from Ed would have certainly been welcome.
Farah Fawcett – well, yes I remember her in Charlie’s Angels. Her followers were slightly before me, as I was a youngin’ back then, but I do remember the “feather” and trying to emulate that with my hair and a curling iron. I loved her as an angel and I hope she made it to angelhood.
And finally – Michael Jackson. Despite all that he has been through more recently in his life, no one can deny that he was an amazing artist and performer. Obviously a troubled soul, he is to me the epitome of the old adage, “Money can’t buy happiness”, but it can buy you so many other damn things – weird things, apparently. I was a fan throughout his musical life – not a screaming, crying, fanatical kind of fan – just a person who enjoyed his songs and music videos. Having been around for his most popular part of his career (I AM a child of the seventies and eighties), I LOVED the Thriller video – watched it over and over again. I was not a fan of him changing his appearance or all of the horrible press he gave himself, the cooky idea of “fathering” the kids he obviously did not father, or the awkward kisses he gave Lisa Marie. Rather, just a fan of a an amazing musician, dancer and performer – aside from his personal life.
Quite honestly, I had forgotten about MJ until a few days ago our neighbor walked in and told us about the breaking news. Michael was one of my husband’s idols – so it was his best friend’s duty to let him know. Now, I can’t turn the channel on radio or TV without his music being played or MJ being talked about. And wow, I forgot how really good Micheal was, whether he was black or white, big nose or little nose, wacko or sicko – his professional life was amazing and successful, quite the opposite of his personal life.
Wherever you 3 souls are right now, God bless you and thanks for making your mark on entertainment!
